How To: Programming Air Conditioners for Better Efficiency

How To: Programming Air Conditioners for Better Efficiency

With summer in full force, that usually means your air conditioning is also set to full force. Keeping cool is essential. But what isn’t essential, is the piling electricity bill at the end of the month.

We’ve written a post about how Home Automation leads to reduced electricity bills and energy efficiency. But what steps can you take to bring those pesky bill down?

We’ve listed down three life hacks you can try out this summer; that will make you a smarter consumer.

1- Time it:

Many believe that if you run your air conditioning the full day, it is better than switching it off and on. Unfortunately that is not the case.

Having the AC run all day uses 317% as much energy as turning it on after work and cooling it down to the same temperature.

The reason is that with the AC constantly running, your home is being cooled, making it a heat magnet. Heat goes to where it’s not, so when your house is cooler, more heat will try to enter.  More heat means your AC works over and over again to remove the heat.

Hence increasing the cooling processes wearing out your system and increasing your energy consumption. What’s the solution?

There are two options here. First to manually set a timer to your AC unit thermostat. Another more convenient option is the installation of a KNX HVAC (Heating, ventilation, Air Conditioning) system in your home. Turning your air conditioning into a smart solution.

Home Automation- Air Conditioning- TempratureHVAC control under KNX systems give you ultimate climate control throughout your residence. With these smart automation systems, you can set your timer according to when you need it the most. KNX allows for multiple user setting which means you can have several units connected. Simply set the timer to turn off about the time you leave for the day, and to turn back on a half hour before you get home.

2- Control It:

Did you know that each degree below 25°C/78°F will increase your energy use by 3-4%? Considering that a typical AC unit consumption is between 325 to 425 watts, there’s room for substantial energy wastage.

All you need to to is lower your air conditioner’s thermostat setting to25°C/78°F. If you are not at home, set your thermostat to a higher temperature.

With home automation solutions available at Future Energy, you have a central control system for your HVAC. How?

HVAC Solution- KNX- Bahrain AutomationYour Future Energy solution using KNX provides individual room control whether it is for heating or cooling. You can interlocking the system with window contact preventing loss of heat or cold. KNX communicates with the controller to adapt the generation of heat or cold to the requirements of the room.

During the night when the rooms are not normally occupied, they are cooled down with cool outside air. This two degree change in temperature can save you 5% to 15% on your bills!

3- Maintain It:

What happens when your system just wont cool? You are likely to crank up the temperature to compensate. How can you ensure that your AC does what it should while being efficient?

Maintain it.

Cooling doesn’t happen magically. Its all in the technology, and like any technology it requires some TLC. The key component in any AC unit is the filter.

Its important that you get them checked and replaced if needed every other month. You may need to do it monthly during heavy use months- Bahrain Summer comes to mind.

The reason behind this, is that a dirty filter slows down the flow of air, which means your HVAC unit works twice as hard. Which means, twice the energy consumption- twice the bills.

Energy Saver has a good checklist that you can follow to ensure that your unit operates with maximum efficiency.

Whatever you plan to do with your HVAC system, one simple action that combines all your energy saving efforts is; home automation.

The best part is, its never too late to turn your home smart. HVAC automation with our KNX products allows for energy saving and efficiency at any stage of your home owner experience.

Smart Homes means Maximising Energy Savings

Smart Homes means Maximising Energy Savings

Doesn’t it seem like there’s always one room in the house or office with the light left on? Regardless of anyone is in there, the lightbulbs keep a constant glow.  In our homes, there seems to always be a certain room where we forget to turn the lights off. This is an irksome, yet preventable waste of energy and money! Future Energy feels your frustration.

Maximize energy savings while minimising effort- How?

One of most efficient and user friendly solutions to this problem is an occupancy sensor. We provide sensors for your lights, air conditioners and blinds. Any centralized household or business appliance can connect to our system. These appliances, if left to their own devices (or ours) can be passive energy wasters. This racks up energy usage and utility bills.  With occupancy sensors attached, passive use is no longer a problem.

These motion sensors detect movement.

They can turn on the lights, set the air conditioner to cool and open up the blinds when you walk into a room. Sensing a lack of movement, they turn off the lights and air conditioner or can lower the blinds back down. Forgetting to turn the bathroom light off is no longer a hassle. The sensors can be set on a timer to avoid annoying employees in offices with little movement. Installing occupancy sensors is an easy hassle free process. Installation can be done at any time during or after construction- Turning your home into a Smart Home.

With Future Energy’s KNX solution, we make the second thought for you. Connected appliances can be set to timer, sensor or remotely controlled. Home automation is the new definition of luxury living. You can achieve your perfect ambience easily and elegantly with our range of home automation solutions.

08062016GB FE RGB lighting imageSet the mood with diffusive lighting. Keep cool with pre-set air conditioning. Open or shut blinds to filter natural daylight. Make sure your home is secure.

All of this is made possible through the customizable KNX user friendly interface. Connect through a smart device, a wall panel or via a central home console. We makes sure that home automation adjustments are always at your fingertips.

Home automation in a luxury home needs to be intuitive to be accessible. This means making sure that every aspect of your  system is clear and easy to navigate. The products we have to offer at Future Energy have adjustable interfaces throughout. Wall panels can build into the design of the home or attached to blend in after construction. These enable easy configuration for individual rooms. You can connect to your system through your web-enabled smart phone or tablet. A central home console is the heart of the system.

08062016GB FE mood lighting imageComprehensive control of a full house requires a larger screen. A central console enables bigger and better graphics. Here you have access to the whole home’s automation system in one location. The heart of the system is usually located in the heart of your home. This is a central, communal area where people gather to spend time. Kitchens tend to be great KNX command centres.  These all-encompassing user interfaces connect to: lights, heating, door intercom, the weather outside.

Wall panels can be customized to suit your needs and preferences. These do not need to be complicated interfaces. In a reception area or guest room, a discreet light switch would do. KNX accommodates for different levels of interaction through a layered menu system. Guests in your home may just need to be able to turn lights on. The wall panels keep it simple for them to do so. You may want to adjust lighting and set air conditioning to a timer. At least one person in your home will want to adjust the master settings in a room. Layered menu wall panels enable you to do this.

You can customize your wall panels completely. You can choose a colour to fit your décor, or even match it to your wall paper. Further, you can choose which panel design is most intuitive for you to use. Some go for colour coding of panels. Colour codes are easy to commit to memory. This tends to work best if uniform colours are used to show functions throughout the house. Labels keep things simple. A more elegant solution could be programming your KNX panel to give feedback. Your KNX system can let you know it’s working. This can happen through a discreet LED light flash.  A mechanical click or haptic feedback (a quick vibration) also work well. Tactile response is especially useful for residents who may have diminished sight or hearing. KNX works with you to accommodate accordingly.

This is the modern age of instant information. You expect to have access to your KNX system whenever, wherever. Remote access through any web-enabled smart device makes that happen. You can have immediate access to your entire house’s settings. Just connect your smart phone or tablet to you KNX system. You don’t even need to get up from the sofa to adjust the air conditioning. KNX remote access has you covered.

The solutions we offer make a complex home automation system easy, intuitive and elegant. Luxury living through home automation is graceful and attainable. Future Energy and KNX solutions partner for seamless integration of your automated home.
